When the sperm reaches the egg cell and fertilizes it, some hormonal changes happen inside the female body; as a result, the female body secretes a high level of progesterone that maintains the inner lining of the uterus. This is the reason why are menstrual cycles absent during pregnancy.
The high progesterone level prevents the hypothalamus from secreting GnRH, which ultimately inhibits the secretion of gonadotropin (both FSH and LH) from the anterior pituitary. This overall process results in no new follicle development, no ovulation, and no menses.
